The SCTICA meetins will be held quarterly (January, April, July, and October) and the annual meetings will be held in January. Southeast Texas ICA Wayne Williford, President On December 4th everything worked out for me to attend the state board of directors meeting and Christmas party in San Antonio. That afternoon we broke up into smaller groups to discuss and brain storm some of the issues facing ICA. I sat in with the membership committee chaired by Robert Bruner. Robert asked for ides that would increase membership. Windy Miller and Billy Bob Lowe talked about the bull and heifer sale they had in Gonzales and the great opportunity they missed to sign folks up because they were so busy doing everything else. Bruce Dopslauf and Robert agreed they had membership cards in their hip pockets but didn’t think to pull them out. That made me realize that what we need to do is create a mindset for membership – have it on the front of our minds when we greet people and be ready to encourage them to join. If you will be patient with me, I’ll tell you how I grew our Sunday School roll in Kountze. And believe me, if it will work in church it will work in ICA. I had read about this guy who owned a car dealership and every Monday morning he held a meeting on the showroom floor with all employees present from the general manager to the boy that washed the cars. He would go to each one and ask them “who do you know that needs a new car, and what can we do to sell more cars?” The general manager seldom had an answer but the boy that washed cars was full of ideas. (I think I would have had them change places) – but what the owner was doing was getting them to always be thinking of ways to sell cars. There were 73 employees but only five were on the payroll as salesmen, but by creating the right mind set of what can we do to sell more cars, all were salesmen. So Thursday rolls around and it’s the mechanic’s bowling night. As he starts to bowl, one of his friends says, man I almost didn’t make it here tonight because my old car was sputtering and missing so bad. Immediately, an alarm goes off and the mechanic says, “Let me tell you about our new cars. I’ll call our salesman right now and you can talk to him.” The car dealer had created a mindset by constantly encouraging and reminding his employees to be looking for opportunities to sell cars. So with this story in mind, I put 3 x 5 index cards in the back of every pew in our church and on Sunday morning when I made the announcements, I asked everyone to take a card and write down one name of someone they know that was not going to Sunday School or church. Just ask for one name, not ten. Numbers will work against you and you won’t get any. Just one! (If they think of two or three, take them by all means.) Now below their name write yours and circle it. That way I’ll know who to call if I need more information on where they live or how to get to their house. You may have to help them think of who would be their best prospect. It could be one of the men they meet every morning and have coffee with at the city cafe, or the lady you run into at the grocery store or in the post office. I got back 91 cards with names and after I subtracted the duplicates because some of the youth had the same friends, I wound up with 78 really good prospects. The really good part was that in almost every case they went right on and contacted the person themselves and when I called in the next few days, it just reinforced the idea that we were interested in them. If you do this, don’t limit it to just your directors, but at a chapter meeting, and encourage everyone present to give you a name. And instead of calling on each one yourself, appoint a committee of 5 or 6 really outgoing individuals to help. After all, you are the president of the chapter and can delegate authority. Good luck if you choose to try this method at one of your meetings. Not everyone will participate, but those that do will give you the best lead on a new member. I always close my meetings and newsletter articles with “Who do you know that is not a member of ICA and what can we do to reach more members?” Wayne Williford, President
